Next Step Programme (IGD)

The Next Step Programme delivers training to young adults who which to progress onto third level education. The programme developes key areas of responsibiity for young adults such as, finanical management, personal development, college life, CV preparation are some of the areas covered by this programme

Our Next Step Programme aims to equip young people who are blind or vision impaired with the skills to manage the transition to life in college.
This course is delivered in a relaxed, yet focused environment.
We provide participants with a “home away from home” atmosphere and the opportunity to spend time with peers in a valuable aspect of the course.
The 5-day residential course includes learning about travel and using public transport, visiting campus accommodation, and tips on making the most of shared living spaces, meeting with Disability Support Services in college, shopping, budgeting and banking skills, assistive technology, personal safety in the community, interview skills and CV writing, introduction to dog mobility, confidence building techniques, cooking and home skills.
We train people from the age of 16. All courses are provided at no cost to you.

Tailored to meet the needs of each individual with a strong emphasis on safety, confidence building, and promoting independent travel. One-to-one instruction in long cane training

Orientation and Mobility (NCBI)

NCBI provides Orientation and Mobility Training to individuals of all ages, nationally. Training in safe travel techniques ranging from orientation skills, to independent travel using long cane are provided mainly on a one to one basis. Orientation and Mobility Training is available nationally across NCBI Centres, home and school environments.
Introduction to safe travel techniques and strategies is available on both an individual and group basis. NCBI’s Children and Young Person’s Team hosts both residential and day camps across the country for children and teenagers (aged 9 – 18) to support Independent Travel Skills.
Orientation and Mobility training is additionally provided by NCBI’s Working Age Team (aged 18 – 65), offered on site (school, work and home), nationally.
